گوش کن ، بانو!
به دقت گوش کن !
چون در آتش اشتیاقی ام
که شاید دیگر بار
به تکرار خود برنخیزد .
حسی غریب ؛
شوری شاعرانه ؛
آذین بستهء اندوه اش ؛
چرا که همواره
رد مرا بو می کشد ،
اندوه !

تنگ در آغوشم گیر ، بانو!
چرا که در اوج مستی ام ؛
رگهام خشکیده اند و
استخوانهام پاشیده ؛
دستی بجنبان و گیسوانت را
در رودسار جنون ام بشوی !
جنون عشقی که هیچگاه
به وصف در نمی آید.

بخوان مرا ، خانم!
خوب بخوان !
چرا که مخاطبی ماه زده می خواهم
تا شعرم
بر مچ دستهاش
چون النگویی بلغزد و
دنیا را
در قامت شاعری ببیند .

مست شو ، بانو !
مست از من !
آن چنان مست که دریا به رنگ گل سرخ درآید،
به رنگ شراب تیره ،
به رنگ خاکستری ،
به رنگ زرد ؛
و چه زیباست
زنی که در حضور شعر
تلو تلو می خورد و
مست می شود.

من
در زیباترین نمود ام هستم،
در درخشان ترین لحظات تمدن ام ،
آه !
آن گاه تن به عشق می سپارم
که متمدن شده باشم ؛
بختی دیگر به من بده
تا تاریخ را بنویسم ، بانو !
چرا که تاریخ
هرگز به تکرار خود برنمی خیزد .

تغییر می دهم تاریخ را
با عشق ،
چنان که تاریخ زنانگی را ؛
شعر به چه کار می آید اگر
چیزی را عوض نکند ؟!
شاعر به چه کار می آید اگر
چیزی را عوض نکند ؟!

با هر حکایت دلدادگی دیگر
افزون شده بر گنجینهء حکایات کشورم ،
گل سرخی
پوست می ترکاند از عطر
و ماه ِنیمه شب ِتابستانی
فواره می زند از شیر .

50 سال پریده ام
از مین زاری به مین زاری دیگر ،
برای فراخواندن ملتم به تغییر؛
نه!
دیوار پلشتی را فرونریخته ام ،
نه از آن گونه که می پنداشتم ؛
تنها من ام،
کسی که از انفجار خودم
منفجر شده ست !

بعد 50 سال
هنوز باید
ماده آهویی را ببینم
که از شکارچی اش می گریزد ؛
هنوز باید
زنی را بشناسم
که به دنبال رهایی اش می گردد.

فوران می کنی در خاطراتم
از سپیدی یاس و
از فواره های غرناطه ،
از اشکهای ماندولین (1)،
چه می توان کرد ، بانو!؟

پیانو
غرق می شود در نت هایش ،
تمام گنجه ها قفل می شوند ،
و شراب دریا سرخ ست .

تعریفی ندارم
برای اشتیاق ،
روزی
گل سرخی می شود بر یقه پیراهنم ،
دیگر روز
خنجری می شود بر بسترم ،
روزی
اخگری سوزان در دستم ،
دیگر روز
نیشکری در دهانم .

در شگفتم از این !
هر کجا که به دیدارت می آیم
زمان به سبزناکی برگ است و
هر گاه که نگاه می کنیم به ساعت هامان
شکوفه می شوند.

مزارع قهوه مان ،
چون نهالی بر می آیند
سبز ؛
و اشتیاق ،
به گاه خیره شدن بر هم ،
در نی نی چشمان مان
به سان سر سبزی بهار
سوسو می زند .

در داستان تو و من
چه رخ داده ، بانو ؟!
هر گاه گمان می برم
گیسوانت را پوشانده ام
با بوسه هایم ،
موهایت
در همان دم ،
قد می کشند .

هر صبح گاه
این احساس به شگفتم می آورد :
به هر چه رو می کنم ،
شعر می شود !
به هر چه دست می کشم ،
شعر می شود !

وسایل کوچک من،
وسایل کوچک تو
شعر می شوند ؛
قهوه جوش
با شوقی شورانگیز
شعر می شود :
دیوانهای غزلی
که هر دو دوست شان داریم.
آن گونه که حوله
در آغوشت می گیرد و
رد آب
طرح تنت را می کشد.

به ریتم واریاسیون های شوپن
اورتور های موزارت
طعم نخستین بوسه
پیش از صبحانه ؛
نزول پای مرمرین تو بر فرش ،
تماس بُرس با گیسوانت ،
لغزش مداد بر گوشه گوشهء چشم ات ،
چه به جا می ماند ؟
چه به جا می ماند از جهان
اگر موسیقی و شعری وجود نداشت ؟
اینها ، بانو!
برگ برگ تاریخ اند
که می وزند
در زندگی مان؛
و تاریخ
هرگز به تکرار خود برنخواهد خاست !

این روزها
چه بر سرم آمده است ، بانو!
هر چه می خوانم
شکوفه می کند،
هر چه می نویسم
غنچه می دهد !
زبانم
قد راست می کند
چون تاکی ،
اسم هایم
شکوفه های سیب ،
فعل هایم
بوته های تمشک ،
حروف مصوت ام
دسته دسته گلهای وحشی ،
حروف صامت ام
رُسته در کناره جاده ،
وزنهای عروضی ام
سبزی علف ،
سبزی خزه ،
سبزی سرخس ؛
و بند بند شعرم
جوانه می زند و برگ می دهد
در خاک گلدان !

در چشمهامان چه چیز
رنگها را در می آمیزد ؟
با تلفن حرف می زنیم و
صدامان
در سبزناکی تابستان
ژرف می شود ؛
بر مبل می لمیم و
خوشه های گندم تن ات
خرمنی سبز و طلایی می شود؛
و اگر حتی
در چنبره اندوه فرو افتیم
غم را
هماره سبز خواهیم یافت.

اگر در کافه ای پا بگذاریم
پیشخدمت و
هر آنچه در شعاع عطر تو باشد
به سبزناکی استوایی بدل خواهد شد.

بانوی آب !
تو که می بریم به بهار و
ستاره ها را
تاکستانها و دانه های کاج را
هدیه می کنی به من ،
تو را سپاس !
هزار هزار بار ،
به پاس سخاوت ات .

من
دیرسالی
در بیابانی بایر می زیستم
و اکنون
سبز می شوم و
می شکوفم
به برکت عشق .

for I am in a passionate fit
and it may not repeat itself
A mystical state! a poetic fit!
splendid in its grief
–for I am scented always
by my grief

Hold me close, my lady,
for I am in a state of tipsiness
My arteries are draining,
my bones disintegrating
Quick! Wash your hair
in the river of my craziness–
the craziness of love
that can never be explained

Read me, my lady
Read me well
for I am in search
of a moonstruck reader
who will slip my poetry
on her wrists like bracelets
and see the world
take the shape of a poet

Be drunk, my lady
Be drunk on me
Be drunk until the sea turns rose-red,
turns winedark,
turns grey,
turns yellow
How beautiful it is
for a woman to lose her balance
in the presence of poetry
and become drunk

I am in the most beautiful
of my tempers
I am in the most radiant
of my moments of civilization
Oh, I do love when I get civilized!
Give me another chance to write history,
my lady, for history
does not repeat itself

I changed history with love
just as I changed the history of womanhood
What is poetry if it does not change things?
What is a poet if he does not change?

With every new story of love
added to my country’s story trove,
the rose overswells with fragrance
and the midsummer moon overspills with milk

For fifty years
I have been leaping
from landmine to landmine,
calling my people to change
No, I have not blasted the wall of ugliness
as I had imagined:
I’m the one who’s been blown up
by my own explosives

In fifty years,
I have yet to see a doe
flee from her hunter,
yet to know a woman
who wanted to be liberated

You who springs into my memory
from the whiteness of jasmine,
from the waterspouts of Granada,
from the tears of the mandolin,
my lady, what can we possibly do?

The piano is drowning in its notes
All the cupboards are locked
The wine of the sea is red

I have no definition for desire
One day it is a rose on my lapel–
the next it is a dagger on my bed
One day it is an ember burning my hand–
the next it is sugarcane in my mouth

What astonishes me
is that whenever I go out to meet you,
the color of time is leaf-green
When we look at our watches,
they are flowers

The grounds of our coffee
turn up green like sprigs
The passion in our irises
when we gaze at each other
gleams spring-green

What is happening in my story
and your story, my lady?
Whenever I think I have covered
your hair with my kisses,
your hair just grows longer

What amazes me
is this feeling every morning
that whatever I look upon turns to poetry
Whatever I touch turns to poetry!

My little things
and your little things
turn to poetry
The coffeepot,
in a fit of desire,
becomes poetry
The lyric books we love together,
the way the bathrobe hugs you,
the graze of water tracing the small of the back

to the rhythm of Chopin’s Variations
and Mozart’s Overtures
The taste of the first kiss before breakfast,
the sink of your alabaster foot into the carpet,
the touch of the brush on your hair,
the slide of eyeliner through the corners of your eyes–
what is left?
What is left of the universe
that has not become music and poetry?
These are pages from history, my lady,
blowing through our lives
and history never repeats itself
Never!

What’s come over me these days, my lady,
that everything I read blooms
and everything I write buds?
My language uncurls like a vine
My nouns are apple blossoms
My verbs are blackberry brambles
My vowels are clustered wildflowers
My consonants grow by the side of the road
My cadence is grass-green, moss-green, fern-green
My stanzas sprout and thicken in the loam

What mixes up the colors in our eyes?
If we speak on the phone,
our voices deepen into summer green
If we recline on the sofa,
the wheat that pours
from your armpits
is a harvest golden-green
If we slump on the curb of grief,
we find even grief evergreen

If we stop at a cafe,
the waiter and all
who step into the radius
of your perfume
turn into tropical greenery

Lady of waters, you
who takes me to the springs
and brings me stars for gifts,
and vineyards and pine-nuts,
I thank you
a thousand times
for your generosity

I had been living in a wasteland
for so long
and now, by the grace of love,
I bloom and green

A young man asked Socrates the secret of success. Socrates told the
young man to meet him near the river the next morning. They met.
Socrates asked the young man to walk with him into the river. When the
water got up to their neck, Socrates took the young man by surprise
and swiftly ducked him into the water.
The boy struggled to get out but Socrates was strong and kept him
there until the boy started turning blue. Socrates pulled the boy’s
head out of the water and the first thing the young man did was to
gasp and take a deep breath of air.
Socrates asked him, “what did you want the most when you were there?”
The boy replied, “Air”. Socrates said, “That is the secret of success!
When you want success as badly as you wanted the air, then you will
get it!” There is no other secret.

The man replied, “Yes sir, I did.” The robber then shot him in the temper, killing him instantly.

He then turned to a couple standing next to him and asked the man, “Did you see me rob this bank?”
